What’s a Wiki? In Plain English, Please.

Wikis are cool and if you’ve used Wikepedia you have been to a wiki on steroids. But did you know anyone can have a wiki? On anything? That’s right. And they can be very, very useful. Here’s a neat video intro to wikis from the clever folks at Commoncraft.

Consider the possibilities. Are there any group projects in your school plans? Anything that requires collaboration? Even a family’s learning plans/curriculum can be laid out in a wiki.

Here’s the web-based wikis mentioned in the video: pbwiki, wetpaint, and wikispaces. The software that is the framework for Wikipedia is MediaWiki and it’s free to install on your own website. Here’s a site with lists and links to all things wiki.
