Our son is working on an introduction to chemistry and he’s having lots of fun learning about the periodic table of the elements. There seems to be an endless number of periodic tables on the web. But, here is a list of the best chemistry resources I’ve collected on the web, both scholarly and silly:
- Chemicool Periodic Table: Interactive Table with links to Chemistry Dictionary, Chemistry Tools and other resources.
- Chemistry Comes Alive: Videos of chemical reactions from the Journal of Chemical Education. My personal fave is the exploding ice bomb. Very Alaskan.
- Los Alamos National Laboratory Periodic Table: Flash interactive table for Elementary, Middle School and High School students
- Michael Dayah’s Periodic Table: flash with links to Wikipedia
- Wooden Periodic Table: this site won a Scientific American Web Award.
- Chemsoc Visual Elements: claims to be the most stunning peridic table on the web
- Element Displays: This company carries beautiful displays and samples of the elements. A complete set of 83 samples plus 9 trace samples is only $3815.
- Tom Lehrer’s The Elements. This list is not complete without this tune which contained the crime solving solutions a few weeks ago on our family’s favorite show, NCIS.

- Periodic Table of the Internet: last but not least. This has little to do with the periodic table except that it’s a table. (H/T Makezine)
Awesome! We’re slowly building a big periodic table on our kitchen wall and though I was familiar with some of those sites (LOVE the Wooden Periodic Table) others will be a great help.
Love it, thanks! My son is studying Chemistry this year, and we especially liked the Elements song.
I suscribed to your feed in my Google Reader, not that I understand it. But at least it means I can find you again
Leslie
Dawn,
I thought the Wooden one was cool, too. I wish I had neat stuff like this way back in the 70’s when I was first learning chemistry.
Hi Leslie,
I love the Elements song. I guess it’s about 50 years old but thanks to YouTube and the internet I’m introduced to it just a year or so ago.
