Blogs in Plain English

Hot off the press, so to speak. The folks at Commoncraft have created another cool whiteboard video, a primer on blogging. (3 min.)

My son really wants a blog of his own. Hmmmm. He wants to be able to write and publish so his friends can read and comment. Sounds like a good way to encourage practical writing skills.

My son and I work on a blog together. It’s been great to have a shared project. But I have to admit it hasn’t done as much for his writing as I’d hoped. While I like the fact that he sees his work “published,” this doesn’t seem to motivate him to self-edit or take his writing to the next level. But it’s one more tool. (An added bonus is that he’s been able to help me a bit with the technology, which is a wonderful role reversal.)

Interesting. I’ve had J write 5 posts for me to look at before we do this. It is a different style of writing for sure. Pithy is best, opposite of a 5-paragraph essay. I’m looking forward to seeing how he does.
