The Alaska Standards Based Assessment were this week and concluded today. John said they were pretty easy. Whew! It added some serious structure to our usually casual schedule. Testing started promptly at 9 a.m. at a local church. Tuesday was Reading, Wednesday Writing, Thursday Math and today 8th graders also had a Science assessment.
It’s a big event for our school and the staff did a great job organizing it. The assessments are no big deal for some students and very daunting for others. I’m always sympathetic to the 3rd graders who are the youngest ones and not sure what to expect. I’m glad it’s over for this year.

Have one of those 3rd graders…daunting to say the least. I know there isn’t really another way to do it, but it is interesting to me that, as homeschoolers, our kids have to be tested in this way. They don’t sit at desks in a crowded, quiet room with a teacher standing up front giving directions. That isn’t how they learn, how can they be expected to do their best being tested this way?
Not complaining, just throwing out a thought.

Another thought about the tests…my fourth grader said there wasn’t one question on division. Are these standards too low? It makes me wonder if doing well on these tests really means anything.
