Besides homeschooling we have other avocations. Ten years ago we bought some lake front property in Willow, Alaska about 70 miles from Anchorage. It’s been a huge project. The goal was a cabin, a place to get away, to hang out with family and friends. We would build it ourselves. Whew, it’s been a huge project. Yes, we can drive to it and it’s on the power grid and we’ve put in a well and septic. A civilized refuge was required. In many ways it’s the ultimate homeschool project. Our kids have an up close and very personal experience of what’s required in skill and materials and determination and good humor to build a small house.

The latest cabin task was replacing the teetering, rotting, floating dock that came with the property. A dock that was solid, that one could tie a boat to was necessary. Alaska has its challenges to construction. But in this case ice and snow worked in our favor. April, when the ice was still 30+ inches thick was the time to start the project. Take a look.
